Do schools kill creativity?
Wonderful TED talk by Sir Ken Robinson on creativity and education. This works into my “hunter/gatherer” mania. Schools are industrial (gathering). Creativity requires more wide-ranging, less structured skills (hunting).
I would have preferred “Infovore” to “Informavore,” but still…
An essay at Edge.org called, “The Age of the Informavore.” We’ll get to my thoughts on the essay in a minute. My first thought was, “Wow. This guy doesn’t make up new words very often.” He is German, and English … Continue reading
My hunting theory is gathering steam
New York Magazine has a lead article called, “In Defense of Distraction.” It’s good. On page seven, we read: The truly wise mind will harness, rather than abandon, the power of distraction. Unwavering focus—the inability to be distracted—can actually be … Continue reading
Doctoral hunting
Another in my series that examines the rise of “hunting” behavior in our connected, mediated, informationalized world. An op-ed piece in the NYT titled, “End the university as we know it,” seemed, to me, to have lots of hints of … Continue reading
Learning to hunt — Newsweek gets it wrong… and insults a whole bunch of us in the process
I subscribe to Newsweek, and generally enjoy it. Any pub with regular articles by Fareed Zakaria is worth keeping on the nightstand. This last week, though, there was an article about how President Obama’s use of a Blackberry is, well… … Continue reading
Good Will… Gathering?
One of the best rants in movie history is, I believe, the one that Will Hunting (played by Matt Damon) lets rip on a recruiter from the NSA. Partly I love it because it’s delivered in the wonderful South Boston … Continue reading
Continuous Partial… Look! A Bunny!
I’ve heard the term Continuous Partial Attention a few times recently. It was coined by Linda Stone. Some quotes and comments here on O’Reilly. Partly it rings true. There are days, of course, when the email piles up and the … Continue reading
